Education
Towards the end of secondary school I began searching for a career that would suit someone who was "good at mathematics" – actuarial studies very quickly became my ideal course. I was extremely fortunate that at the time Sydney was home to one of the only Universities in the world that offered a specialist actuarial programme within its undergraduate course.
Business Career and Professional Development - Major Stages
1985: Junior member of the actuarial department at MLC Life, a large mutual life insurance company.
1987: After two years at the 101 year old MLC, I moved to what was then the six week old life insurance subsidiary of Westpac Bank. This was the start of a very fruitful nine year period during which I operated within a very small actuarial team in virtually every area of life office actuarial work. 1996: Hannover Life Reassurance of Autralasia, initially I took the role of Products and Marketing Actuary, a position that allowed me to expand my horizons to take in all of the company's clients covering virtually the entire Australian and New Zealand life markets. 1999: Three years later I became the company's appointed actuary. This is a role that has thrown its fair share of challenges at me, but one that I find extremely satisfying. I'm proud of the work that I've produced, and happy to have been able to stamp a little of my own identity on the actuarial function.
Hobbies and Sports
With two daughters aged five and three, sports and hobbies have become somewhat difficult to maintain. However I have a passion for sailing, particularly on small and dangerously fast racing skiffs that are a trademark of Sydney Harbour, which I hope to readdress this summer. Film watching is high on the list of favourites, and my wife and I both love to travel. Finally, I hope to one day complete a wooden model of the Cutty Sark that I started way back in 1985!
