Business Career and Professional Development – major stages

1981: I started my career as a student actuary at Crusader Insurance working mainly on pension scheme valuations and funding reports. It was here that I met my wife Elaine.

1986: I joined Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada at the end of 1986 initially working in product development. After qualifying as an actuary in 1988 I continued my career mainly on the marketing and product development side eventually becoming Assistant Vice President Product Marketing in 2005 to oversee the integration of the activities of the newly acquired Confederation Life. It was during this period that I first encountered Skandia Re (UK) (later Hannover Life Re (UK)) when they reassured our first entry into the Critical Illness market, having been impressed by their knowledge and client commitment. In 1996 I became Appointed Actuary and a director of various UK subsidiary companies. In this role I was also responsible for project managing all UK aspects of the demutualisation of the company which took place in March 2000.  It was as one of the directors that we reached the difficult decision to close the UK operations to new business in 2001.

2001: I joined Ernst & Young as a Director in their Life Actuarial Practice, focusing mainly on actuarial audits and consulting projects in connection with valuation processes and the role of the Appointed Actuary.

2003: In March I joined Hannover Life Re (UK) as General Manager Business Development with responsibility for managing and developing business with clients in the UK. This role encompassed all aspects of the relationship and included the specific responsibilities of CRM, corporate marketing, product development and research, pricing, underwriting and claims management.

2008: In March I accepted the challenge of a new role, that of Managing Director for Hannover Life Re Africa with overall responsibility for the life business in sub-Saharan Africa.

Hobbies and Sports:

Having 4 children takes up a lot of time. Beyond this I have always been a keen sportsman and although my footballing days are over I still enjoy golf, squash and going to the gym. In addition I am a keen reader and traveler.
