Rüdiger Mehl

I was born in Hamburg in 1953.

Education

After having studied Mathematics, Insurance Law and Insurance Economics at the University of Hamburg, I joined a small reinsurance company in Hamburg called Transatlantic Re in 1979. However I returned to the University of Hamburg after some months, as a lecturer in Business Administration and Decision &  Game Theory. At the same time I wrote my thesis on  „Lower Premium Bounds of Excess of Loss Treaties",  purely non-life actuarial work.  I received my doctorate (Ph.D.) in 1986.

Business Career and Professional Development - Major Stages

1983: I received an offer by Hamburg International Re (HIR) to start as a reinsurance trainee within the life department. After a short stint of basic reinsurance training I went into Marketing with a special focus on Southern Europe and Latin America.

1986: I was promoted to Head of the Life Department, in charge of all core activities (from marketing to accounting) of life reinsurance.

1990: Due to a change in ownership, HIR retired from active reinsurance business. The whole life reassurance portfolio was novated to Hannover Re. Furthermore Hannover Re made the life team from HIR an offer to join them. Like me some others of the team accepted this offer and we started to build up Hannover Life Re – now ranking number four among professional life reassurers worldwide. My first position in Hannover was as Associate Director heading one of the two Market Departments.

1996: I was promoted to Managing Director, heading all activities of Hannover Life Re International, and in charge of Europe, Asia, Latin America and all retrocessions of Hannover Life Re. 120 colleagues, 11 offices in different locations and challenging responsibilities keep me busy. Sometimes I dream of a four-week business trip to Latin America, like in the early 80's when I was  unavailable day and night due to the lack of mobiles and e-mail.

Hobbies and Sports

In keeping with my profession I enjoy travelling all over the world. At home I go to a gym and sometimes, at the weekend, a bicycle ride with the family. I enjoy easy reading like science fiction, fantasy and thrillers.
