Business Career and professional Developement - Major Stages

1982: I started my actuarial career in the UK but soon left for Cape Town to work for Norwich Union. In retrospect, this move really launched my career because the relative shortage of actuarial skills in South Africa meant that I was exposed to a far broader and more intensive experience than would have been the case in the UK.

1987: I moved to Mercantile & General Re thus entering the world of reinsurance in which I have remained ever since. In this role, I supported clients throughout Southern Africa primarily in the universal life, dread disease and disability income lines of business.

1992: I commenced my employment with Winterthur Re with a three year stint in their home office in Winterthur, Switzerland. There, I was primarily responsible for clients in Israel, South Africa and the UK, the latter two territories leading me, for the first time, into close collaboration with Hannover Life Re. I qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries during this period despite having taken the scenic route!

1995: I moved to Texas to become Vice President & Group Actuary in Winterthur Re's life subsidiary in Dallas. Again, I found myself cooperating with Hannover Life Re – this time in the form of the subsidiary in Orlando, Florida.

1999: Four years later, Winterthur Re was sold off and I left for the thriving reinsurance environment in the International Financial Services Centre in Dublin, Ireland.

There, I became the first full time employee of the newly established Hannover Life Reassurance (Ireland) Limited. Now, with a full multi-skilled staff complement and an A rating from AM Best, we leverage Ireland's unique regulatory and fiscal advantages to the benefit of Hannover Life Re clients worldwide.

2007: I left for the sunny shores of Bermuda, to set up a Hannover Life Reinsurance Subsidiary - Hannover Life Re Bermuda.

Hobbies and Sports

Karen and I are both SCUBA-divers and, although we do less diving now that we live in Ireland, we make sure that we go somewhere exotic to dive at least once a year.

I'm a keen runner as I find it the perfect antidote to the stress and occasional excess of the reinsurance lifestyle. I suspect that my marathon days are behind me but I still run half-marathons regularly.
