Alan Stockbridge
Education
I was born and educated in North West London. After Grammar School I attended the University of Sheffield where I specialised in Probability & Statistics, obtaining a BSc (Special Honours).
Business Career and professional Developement - Major Stages
Following University I joined Guardian Royal Exchange Assurance as an actuarial trainee. After a short spell in the Pensions Department, I moved across to the Valuation Department. I quickly inherited a team of actuarial trainees and technicians.
Onward to the Marketing Department where my main involvement was with unit linked contracts and with direct mailing.
Out of the blue came the fantastic opportunity to work in the New Zealand life branch. The management experience from these three years was invaluable and the responsibility of a small operation much welcomed and enjoyed.
1990: Returning to the UK I took up a managerial role in the Finance Department (effectively corporate actuarial work).
1992: I assumed responsibility for reassurance aspects, for many years co-ordinating the placement of reassurance for individual and group risks as well as all office liaison with our reassurers.
2000: I accepted the opportunity to join Hannover Life Re - an organisation I had respected and admired for many years – taking on the role of General Manager (Operations). I was pleased to return to a smaller operation in a wide-ranging role with much responsibility.
2002: I was appointed to the Board as Operations Director and more recently I have also taken on the role of Company Secretary.
Hobbies and Sports
Currently these are mainly gardening, decorating, DIY and keeping reasonably fit. Once the house is more organised, walking and swimming or squash will become more prominent again. Travelling and enjoying wine still feature greatly.
